New vapers are a beautiful thing. But like all Newbs they know not what they do. I was no different. I made most of these same mistakes. So it is my job to try to help you NOT do them.
Disclaimer: These are my personal opinions. everyone is different and it is good to test the waters and see what works best for you. These are just some of the things I wish I had known when I started vaping.
By not doing these things you will:
These 5 Mistakes are very easy to make so don’t feel bad if you have done them already or thinking about doing them. These are also just my suggestions. By all means, you can do whatever you want. These are only from my experience and knowledge I have gained writing for OVW and Vaping for 5 Years.
I get it when I first got into vaping I went to the vape shops and fell in love with all the cool stuff. Maybe you go on youtube and see the coolest new products and want them all. Perhaps you have a friend who vapes and just figure you will get what he has. That way of thinking isn’t always the best way to go about this.
When we first learn to ride a bike we have training wheels. We don’t just sit you in the seat and roll you down the hill. (although some do). You get the feeling for how you balance on the seat and how it feels to turn the wheels as you move. You practice with these training wheels so you can ride a bike without falling on your ass.
Just like with riding a bike, when you first start vaping it’s a good idea to use “training wheels”. By training wheels I mean buying an E-cig that is:
- Easy to use
- Has Safety Features
- Has a history of quality
- Doesn’t have all the bells and whistles you just don’t need at this point.
As a new Vaper your best bet is to go with a regulated Mod. Regulated mods have safety features that mechanical mods just don’t have. You can get mods that go up to 300 Watts. As a new vaper feel free to get a good mod that will last you awhile but try not to crank that mod up full power just because you can. Take it slow. I’ve been vaping for about five years, and I go up to around 80 watts. So take it slow and be safe.
Another thing new vapers often gravitate towards, is the mechanical mod.(seen in the section image above) This is not the best choice. These look cool and because they are just a metal tube are often cheaper than regulated mods. But this is one of the worst decisions you can make.
Try to Stay away from Mechanical Mods. They have no safety features
Mechanical mods like I said are just a metal tube that you put a battery in, screw a tank on top of and by pressing an mechanical switch you complete the connection between the battery and the atty to vape. I hope you can see the dangers in this situation. Because the firing button is at the base of the mod usually, if you set the mod down sometimes it will continue to fire. Left unnoticed you can quickly vent/blow up your battery. So let’s try not to buy these for your first mod.
What should you look for in a new Mod-E-cig?
Safety Features on a mod/E-cig are useful for keeping you safer. Notice how I don’t use the word “safe” nothing will keep you 100% safe that is up to you. But the safety features will help. More and more new mods are coming out loaded with safety features.
Some of the more common and useful ones to look for are:
- Reverse Battery Protection
- Short Circuit Protection
- Dual Circuit Protection
- Low Voltage Protection
Buy a Regulated Mod/E-cig
A regulated mod has an onboard chip that helps you adjust the voltage that is sent to your atty/tank. This little chip can do wonders to make a new vapers life better. For one it helps provide those safety features we just talked about.
Most mods/e-cigs you buy will need batteries. Well, they all do, but some come with built-in batteries. If yours does not come with a built-in battery, then you will need a battery charger. When you are in the shop buying your first E-cig, this is usually the last thing you think about buying. So when the owner says “your going to need a charger” you start thinking about how much you already spent and more often than not try to save a few bucks on this purchase. DONT DO THAT.
Buying a cheap battery charger will be dumb for a few reason.
- Your batteries will degrade faster over time, Leading to weak batteries.
- The charger could just break soon after buying because well, it’s cheap,
- You will have to monitor the charging; Cheap chargers don’t stop charging when the battery is full.
A good charger will make your vaping life so much better. They will take care of your batteries by charging them correctly. Using techniques like trickle charging to keep your batteries running their best. A good charger will also have your back. When the battery is full, the charger will notice that and stop filling the battery. They will then monitor the battery if left in the charging bay to keep it complete and healthy till you return to remove it.
Luckily the battery charging market isn’t as big as the e-cig market, so you don’t have a million options.
Efest LUC v4
The Efest LUC V4 is one of these chargers. Able to charge and monitor up to four batteries individually.
One of the great features of the LUC V4 is all the safety features that are built in
- Low Power Alarming
- Built-in Reverse Polarity Protection
- Zero Voltage Activation Function
- Over-Charging Protection
The LUC V4 will charge almost every size of battery you would ever use. And any battery used in vaping. 18650, 26650. Another added feature is the LUC V4 can also charge your cell phones or anything that runs or is powered with a USB cable.
You can buy an EFEST LUC V4 charger for around $28.00 (or a dual battery charger for $24.00)
Other Notable Chargers:
This goes along well with #2. A damaged battery is one of the most dangerous things in vaping. A damaged battery is one bump away from total meltdown. Many of the news you see about an E-Cig blowing up is due to a battery malfunction of some type.
Things that constitute a damaged battery:
- Damaged Outer Casing (shrink wrap)
- Wet looking surface
- Bulging Case
A battery is dumb; they don’t have brains; they don’t know if it is safe to unleash the electricity or not. If you put one in your pocket and have your keys bouncing around and you get your keys touching both ends then guess what, (shits about to get hot)
Simple steps to take to take care of your battery:
- Get a battery case for traveling (Google “18650 battery storage box”)
- This goes with the one above, Don’t put them loosely in your pocket. (Get a case)
- Buy a good charger
- Replace them if damaged (See list above)
- If your mod/E-cig uses two, then buy them in pairs and keep them together (always)
- Do some research for good batteries (Google “Best 18650 Battery for Vaping“)

This one is along the lines of our first point in this article, “Don’t buy the ‘cool’ stuff” but buying a tank that fits your needs is vital to enjoying and getting the most out of vaping.
You have four Basic types of tanks
1. The RDA (Rebuildable Dripping Atomizer)
An RDA is probably the worst idea for a new vaper. As the name says “rebuildable” this means you will have to build your coils. The coil is the actual heating element that vaporizes the e-liquid. These are for experienced vapers only. If you make a funky coil and run it on a mechanical mod, you can quickly find out why this is a bad idea. (hint “boom”)
These are also called “Drippers” because as you can see, there is no tank so to get the juice onto the cotton to vape you need to manually “drip” the juice.
2. RTA (Rebuildable Tank Atomizer)
These are just as bad as the RDA only with a tank on top. An RDA has no tank, so you have to drip the juice every time the cotton goes dry. An RTA fixes that problem by providing a tank. BUT you still need to build the coils.
The RTA is for advanced users. If you want to start learning to build coils, buy a cheap RDA and start wrapping coils. See if you are any good. Just make sure you fire those coils on a regulated mod or better yet, get an ohm tester. But you can buy pre-rolled coils. We sell them. But if you are new to vaping this is not the best idea. Sure you will be able to use it but if something goes wrong, it can be hard to figure out what to do. Start watching some of our Coil building Articles and learn.
3. Sub-Ohm Tank
The Sub-Ohm Tank is getting better. In fact, most new vapers end up with one of these. This is because a Sub-Ohm Tank is easy to use and maintain. You do not need to build your coil to vape. They use heads that have everything built for you. You just have to screw it in and change them. BUT as the name implies Sub-ohm, these deal is high voltage and wattages. Coil are measured in ohms or electrical resistance. The lower the ohm, the higher the performance. So a sub-ohm coil/head is anything under 1.0 ohms.
These will work for a new vaper as long as you know what it is you are using. They are more for performance. You do have an even better choice.
4. Glassomizer/Ego Tanks
These are just like just like the Sub-Ohm Tanks but do not deal with Sub-ohm resistance. They still use pre-built coils/heads and are the other most popular choice for new vapers. This would be my number one choice for a new vaper.
At first, these kinds of tanks were ok but didn’t produce much vapor. But now they are getting much better, and you will love clouds you will get. One of the best and most popular is the Aspire Nautilus.
The Aspire Nautilus is one of the best choices for a new vaper. They come from a long line of reliable products and are straightforward and safe to use.
- 22mm Diameter
- 304 Stainless Steel Construction
- 2ml Tank Capacity
- Adjustable Airflow
- Gold Plated Contacts
- Threaded Top Fill Design
Pick up an Aspire Nautilus X tank for around $25.00
